Jim Hemingway came to Queenstown nine years ago for one ski season ... The resort is now home and he spends his winters as Coronet Peak rentals head of department.

Why did you choose this job?

The opportunity arose to further my ski-industry career in Queenstown.

Is this your first season?

It's my third season - I love the industry, love working up the mountain and love the team I work with.

Where are you from?

Originally, the UK. I came for one ski season nine years ago ...

What kind of education did you have before you took up this job?

Ski/outdoor retail, BA (Hons) adventure tourism management.

How would you describe your job?

Hard work but rewarding.

What's the best thing about it?

Seeing smiles on people's faces at the end of the day after their first experience on snow.

What challenges come with it?

Meeting customers' expectations of an on-mountain rental department.

What skills or qualities do you need?

A sense of humour, people skills, time management, team building, being able to work under pressure.

Who would your job appeal to?

No-one, as I'm not giving it up in a hurry! Seriously ... someone with a passion for ski equipment, good ski-product knowledge for job training and good technical knowledge of ski tuning and repairs.

How are you settling into life in Queenstown?

I love Queenstown - it's been my home for three years and hopefully many more to come.

What's your best advice for people who move to Queenstown for seasonal work?

Come with some savings and buy a Frisbee golf disc.

What's been the most amusing on-the-job experience so far this season?

This morning I went to measure someone's foot for ski boots and they took their shoe off and placed the shoe on the foot measurer.
