Sixteen paragliders competed at the annual Acrofest competition in Kingston last week, but the final event will not be held until March 13.
Organiser Craig Taylor said flying had to be postponed on Friday morning because of high winds.
"The wind died down for the afternoon, so it was perfect," he said.
Competitors had to complete a series of four tricks before landing in Lake Wakatipu.
Extra points were awarded to those who landed on rafts stationed in the lake, he said.
Queenstown paraglider Luca Soulos said it was a fantastic event.
"It was great.
"The conditions were perfect.
"I took off and the views were fantastic of the lake, and it's so beautiful.
"You have plenty of height to play with to do your tricks," he said.
The final of the competition was to have been held at Queenstown Bay last Saturday, but was postponed because of high winds.
Mr Taylor said the full event was planned for March 13, when paragliders would start the action at 10am, before the base jumping and sky diving about 11am.
Bands would also play on the lake front for the duration of the event, he said.
