The discovery of the package sparked a full scale emergency services call out.
The package was received just after 10am and forced the evacuation of the court house, on Stanley St, and the neighbouring New Zealand Post outlet.
Two fire appliances from Queenstown and one from Frankton were called into action, along with several members of Queenstown Police.
Two volunteer fire fighters were fitted out in protective suits with breathing apparatus before heading in to the court house, which was cordoned off to the public, emerging about 15 minutes later with the suspicious package, before being hosed down.
No further details are available at this stage.
