Jetstar's new domestic service, starting with a flight into Queenstown this morning, may have its wings clipped by an announcement from archrival Pacific Blue.

A Pacific Blue spokesman yesterday confirmed the airline would be making an announcement at 10am - ahead of the landing of the first flight of Jetstar's Auckland to Queenstown service at 10.50am.

No further details were available.

Several sources said the budget carrier was about to launch new transtasman services, which could include a weekly service from Sydney to Queenstown.

Destination Queenstown chief executive Stephen Pahl, who is flying on the Jetstar service from Auckland to Queenstown today, said he had also heard the rumours.

"We will just have to wait and see."

Last week's announcement that Pacific Blue will resume transtasman flights from Hamilton in September has fuelled the speculation. But those approached in Queenstown for comment yesterday adopted a neither-confirm-nor-deny stance.

Queenstown Airport Corporation chief executive Steve Sanderson said he would not comment "at this time" when asked if the corporation had been negotiating with Pacific Blue.

Queenstown Lakes Mayor Clive Geddes said he was not surprised by news Pacific Blue management was considering adding the resort as a destination.

"There's a growing realisation in Australia and New Zealand that both tourist industries are important to each other," Mr Geddes said.
