The number of people who appeared in the Queenstown District Court yesterday on drink-driving charges arising from the holiday season was "just ridiculous," Judge Kevin Phillips said.
The judge convicted 15 drivers while at least three more people were remanded for sentence.
"Why are there so many EBAs [excess breath alcohol]?," the judge asked, describing the situation as "just ridiculous".
In response, prosecutor Sergeant Ian Collin said the number of convictions was partly due to an increase in police operations.
"We've had more police stops and checks over the Christmas and New Year busy period, which will explain part of the rise," he said.
Judge Phillips ordered a total of $5280 in fines, $1514.90 in court costs, and 380 hours' in community work, for the 15 drink-driving-related convictions.
