A new and commercial-free music radio station may hit airwaves as early as next month, says John Stapleton, the owner of Queenstown radio station Revolver.
The new station is tipped to be called BeatsFM or Central Beats.
It will have content from Wanaka airing until 8pm and streaming live from Revolver from 8pm until early in the morning.
Mr Stapleton said he and the Wanaka organisers had been sitting on the idea for quite a while.
He said the music spectrum for the new station would be "really broad".
It would encompass a range of genres during the day and at night would be "a bit more up-tempo - it's not love songs until midnight".
"It's focused on people under their 40s, so going from house through to today's stuff - dubstep, drum 'n' bass, hip-hop, breaks and electro.
"The main thing is that it does not get hollowed out by advertising.
"We won't have that problem."
At night there would be mainly music - minimal talking. There would be a set structure of DJs playing specific nights of the week.
There might also be a chance to involve high school pupils.
Mr Stapleton bought an FM transmitter worth about $1000 with a range of about 2km for the station.
"It does not go around hills - it can only go where you can see, but once we have it streaming on the internet it can go around the world if people know the address." Local internet providers FishNet would hook it all up.
Mr Stapleton said "professional and reliable" DJs were welcome to apply to be part of the station.
"If they are in town for the season they are more than welcome to come and approach us as long as they are not going to damage what we are doing," he said.
