Christmas ham will be fresher to Queenstowners this year with the opening of the new $1 million Goodman Fielder distribution depot on Wednesday.

The Christchurch-based company distributes household labels including Meadowfresh, Edmonds, 100% Pure Bacon, Vogels, Tararua and Irvines.

Company managing director Peter Reidie said the depot upgrade signalled the company's intent to increase growth in the Wakatipu region.

"It was built with the ambition for growth. It'll help with smoother and fresher distribution."

The Queenstown depot accounts for the distribution of more than 1.8 million litres of beverages and 150 tonnes of food, meat, cheese and dairy for the local area a year.

"Goodman Fielder has committed to the long-term service of the Queenstown region by investing more than $1 million over the next 10 years," Mr Reidie said.

The new depot would enable an 80% increase in the speed of loading and unloading and a 150% increase in chilled floor space area.
