NZone Skydive's new $2.5 million Cessna Grand Caravan aeroplane was welcomed to Queenstown with water cannons from two firefighting appliances at Queenstown Airport yesterday.

The award-winning tandem skydive operator, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, introduced the aircraft with the aim of taking more customers in fewer trips, in a shorter time frame, NZone general manager Robynne Williams said.

Known as a "Supervan 900", the plane has a single turboprop engine and is a fixed-gear short haul airliner with a four-blade propeller and flat-rated 900hp engine. This means its fuel consumption is more economical and the carbon footprint per person was significantly reduced, the operator said.
