All but one public submission backed a resource consent application by the organisers of the charitable Queenstown Auto Extravaganza to hold a 201m race on Domain Rd annually for five years.
The 13-strong organising committee of Queenstown business people sought consent to hold The Eighth-mile Sprint on March 1 next year, the final day of a three-day event aimed at raising money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand.
The sprint proposed to temporarily close the Queenstown Lakes District-owned road for six hours, between 9am and 3pm, and would require a detour around Lower Shotover and Speargrass Flat Rds.
Consent was sought for temporary signage, toilets, spectator areas with grandstand seating, pit stops and carparking areas.
Up to four lots of private land would be used to park race vehicles after the sprint and as pit and spectator areas, a public carpark, a facilities and operations area. Written approval was obtained from the landowners.
Domain Rd residents Roger and Carol Wilkinson submitted their permission for their property to be used as a spectator area.
"Best of luck for excellent weather conditions for a successful fundraising event."
Another nine submissions by residents gave their support. However, another Domain Rd resident did not give approval "for this noisy and intrusive plan".
The resident said the proposal would make it impossible to leave or return to the house for six hours and wrote the other temporary proposals were "totally unacceptable".
The organising committee was in the process of obtaining affected party approvals for submission with their application, Lakes Environmental planning manager Brian Fitzpatrick said.
