Queenstown stood with the nation on Friday paying tribute to the earthquake victims with the service at Frankton's City Impact Church and watching the televised memorial.

About 80 people gathered, including displaced Christchurch families and schoolchildren.

Queenstown Lakes District Council chief executive Debra Lawson read a message on behalf of Mayor Vanessa van Uden, who was in Christchurch attending the national memorial at Hagley Park.

"I offer all Cantabrians our heartfelt sympathy. You have lost people and places, but not your identity.

"We offer our strength, our spirit and our friendship as South Islanders and as New Zealanders."
