Mayor, councillors to be sworn in

New Queenstown Lakes Mayor Vanessa van Uden and all councillors will be sworn in to office in a public ceremony on Tuesday, October 26.

Ms van Uden is expected to recommend highest-polling Wanaka councillor Lyal Cocks be made deputy mayor.

The inaugural meeting will be called by council chief executive Debra Lawson and held at the Lake Hayes Pavilion, near Arrowtown, from 7pm.

New and returning councillors will make and attest their declarations, as required by the Local Government Act.

A general explanation of legislation concerning local government will follow, arranged by Ms Lawson and legal counsels from Queenstown firm Mactodd.

The date and time of the first full council meeting will be scheduled and other administrative matters dealt with.

The election of chairmen and women to council subcommittees may also take place.

Electoral officer Jane Robertson said Ms van Uden and Ms Lawson were in the process of deciding items for the "family orientated" ceremony.

"It's also an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate [the mayor and councillors'] success at being elected to public office."

Ms Robertson said anyone could attend. About 40 people were present for the ceremony in 2007.

The meeting will be publicly notified seven days in advance as a statutory requirement.
