Director Doug Kamo is relishing the challenge of directing Showbiz Queenstown's most ambitious show so far, 'Les Miserables'. The show opens in May.
Ambitious is a good word to describe Showbiz Queenstown's planned production of Les Miserables next month, director Doug Kamo says.

"It's important to note this is the single largest production for Showbiz Queenstown to date, with the largest budget and the biggest commitment of man hours.

"It's a massive, massive task."

But he is confident everything is falling into place and he cannot wait to "unleash" it on audiences.

"We are three-quarters of the way through staging the show in only three weeks - so everything is running to plan."

As a freelance stage show director based in Dunedin, Mr Kamo told the Queenstown Times he felt lucky to be invited back to Queenstown and witness the growth of musical theatre in the resort over that time.

"I have been coming here for a number of years and the growth over the last five years has been outstanding," Mr Kamo said.

Les Miserables, Victor Hugo's epic tale of redemption and revolution in 18th-century France, is the longest-running stage show in London's West End.

The task of bringing it to Queenstown is almost as epic, with sets designed in Dunedin and constructed in Oamaru especially for the stage in the Memorial Hall.

The prefabricated pieces will arrive in Queenstown in a fortnight and Mr Kamo said they will take about four weeks to assemble.

He credits Queenstown with having a wealth of talent. As well as loyal locals, the transient population base constantly brings new skills and ideas into the resort.

"There are over 100 people directly involved and around 100 more indirectly," he said.

As well as the beautiful scenery, Mr Kamo said it was the strength of the friendships he had made in Showbiz Queenstown that made returning to the resort such a pleasure.

"Certainly, I wouldn't do a production if it didn't interest me . . . all of them [shows in Queenstown] have been interesting to do."

• The show will open on May 13 and run until May 23. Tickets are available from i-Site and Ticket Direct.
