An American family of five will be the first official guests in the luxurious Eichardts Lakefront Cottage this week.

Queenstown's exclusive Eichardts Private Hotel has opened the boutique cottage for business after three years of development on a previously vacant site.

The hotel has a management contract with the cottage owners, an Otago and Irish couple who are based in Dubai.

The $2 million cottage was designed to blend with the historic character of the waterfront.

It was designed by multi-award-winning Dalman Architecture with approval from the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

The accommodation on Marine Pde comprises four split-level suites, which are interconnected so they can be opened up as a large single accommodation space or sectioned off.

Groups of families or friends could be accommodated by hiring the entire bottom or upper floor, or all four suites, to sleep a maximum of 15 guests.

Seven or eight could sleep on each floor and prices started at $985 a night per suite.

General manager Victoria Shaw said the addition of the cottage to the Eichardts portfolio offered flexibility for parties who wanted to enjoy both the view of Lake Wakatipu and the services of the hotel but not necessarily in a hotel environment.

The interior design was co-ordinated by New Zealander Virginia Fisher, named as one of the top five hotel interior designers in the world by Time magazine.

Suites were designed to be spacious and airy and illuminated with natural light.

Each suite includes bedrooms, lounge and kitchen.

"The aim is for guests to feel at home when they walk in," Ms Shaw said.

"We've focused on delivering a relaxed, easy and homely environment with lots of charm in a wonderful setting, reflecting the unique Eichardts identity with a touch of cottage styling."
