Lucky escape after car lands in ditch

A Queenstown man had a lucky escape when he lost control of his car, which rolled and landed in a ditch on State Highway 6 near Frankton between the access road to the Remarkables skifield and the Kelvin Heights Peninsula Rd intersection.

The accident happened around 3.45pm yesterday as the 39-year-old man was driving home to Queenstown from a job in Gore.

Constable Brian Fitzgerald, of Queenstown, said the man had been "very lucky" not to receive any injuries.

"He was checked by St John staff, but did not require hospitalisation.

"The car took a little bit of a bashing, but the man was unharmed," he said.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.

They said ice did not appear to be a factor, and there was only minimal grit on the road.

"Speed did not appear to be a factor either, but we cannot rule out he could have been affected by glare from the low afternoon sun," Const Fitzgerald said.

No other cars or people were involved in the crash.

Two other non-injury accidents were reported.

One was at Littles Rd in Dalefield at 7.40pm on Saturday, and the other at Manse Rd near Arrowtown at 5.35am yesterday.
