More than $7000 was raised for Wakatipu High School resources from the first ''locals' day'' held by Southern Discoveries.

More than 450 people took up the tourism operator's offer of discounted scenic cruises on the catamaran Spirit of Queenstown and the Merino experience in the woolshed at Mt Nicholas Station across Lake Wakatipu.

Four cruises to the station were scheduled on Saturday, but a fifth cruise was added because of demand. Several woolshed tours sold out.

A fundraising sausage sizzle for the Queenstown Primary School year 6 trip to Stewart Island helped feed patrons, most of whom were Wakatipu residents, but also included visitors from Cromwell, Alexandra and Dunedin.

Southern Discoveries Queenstown and marketing manager Anita Golden said the day was ''very successful'' for the community and company and was likely to be repeated next year.
