The third set of traffic lights in Queenstown and Central Otago is expected to be turned on by the end of next week.

New Zealand Transport Agency area manager for Central Otago John Jarvis, of Dunedin, said this week the lights, near Ross St in Frankton, would be operational when the agency finished the $100,000 pedestrian crossing there.

The crossing would be identical to the one established on the 70kmh-zoned Kawarau Rd between McBride and Humphrey Sts a year ago, he said.

Traffic lights were the safest answer and they would be on green most of the time, so there would not be any major impediment to traffic.

A safe crossing was needed for Remarkables Primary School pupils walking to and from the Queenstown Events Centre, as the school was increasing its enrolment in stages, he said.

There would be up to 460 pupils in years 1 to 8 by 2012.

Frankton residents also wanted a safe passage to the Remarkables Park Town Centre, Mr Jarvis said.

The school and the Queenstown Lakes District Council had been part of the agency's consultation.

The first set of traffic lights is at the single-lane Kawarau Bridge, further along Kawarau Rd.
