Two  men with singing ability are urgently required to fill the cast of Showbiz Queenstown's forthcoming season of Les Miserables.

Rehearsals for the season, to be staged at the Queenstown Memorial Hall from May 13 to 23, began last month with an intensive music workshop lead by nationally acclaimed musical director Stuart Walker.

Music rehearsals are continuing twice weekly under the direction of Cheryl Collie, building to full rehearsals when director Doug Kamo returns to Queenstown next month.

While Mr Walker said he was excited about the progress made and the quality and enthusiasm of the cast, two pieces were missing from the Les Miserables puzzle.

The male company was still short two members and Mr Walker said it was "imperative" the company was fully cast before the next music workshop, from March 6 to 8.

Mr Kamo said Les Miserables was driven by a strong male chorus, and it was essential two strong male vocalists were found within the next fortnight.

Showbiz president Marty Newell was confident "the right guys are out there".

Les Miserables is the most ambitious production undertaken by Showbiz Queenstown and features the strongest creative team to be put together in the resort for a long time.

Les Miserables is a musical composed by the French composer Claude-Michel Schonberg with a libretto by Alain Boublil.

Sung through, it is one of the most frequently performed musicals worldwide.

In 2006, the show celebrated its 21st anniversary and became the longest-running West End musical in history. It is still running.

The musical is based on the 1862 novel Les Miserables by Victor Hugo.
