A Queenstown veterinarian is calling for pet owners to use "common sense" during this Friday's Guy Fawkes night celebrations.
"Every year we get calls for at least a couple of weeks after Guy Fawkes night ... we just want people to be sensible during the silly season," Clare Temperton said.
Ms Temperton works at Pets N Vets in Frankton and said fireworks could be extremely distressing to pets, particularly cats and dogs.
"We would like owners to keep their pets confined and neighbours should also keep each other notified of plans to let off fireworks."
Ms Temperton said the number of calls they received increased at this time of the year, with most people reporting missing animals.
"We need to understand they don't enjoy it as much as we do," she said.
Anyone seeking further advice on Guy Fawkes safety could call, or visit, Pets N Vets at Terrace Junction, Frankton.
