It came as no surprise when the winner's name was read out for the freeskiing Kids CalciYum Cup at Cardrona Alpine Resort on Saturday.

Jackson Wells (12), of Wanaka, is the latest in his family to feature on the winner's podium, following in the footsteps of older brothers Jossi and Byron.

The pair are seasoned pros on the international freeskiing circuit, despite being aged only 20 and 18 respectively, with Jossi named the World Freeskiing Champion in March.

It was Jackson's turn on Saturday, holding off a field of 50 to win the Cardrona Kid's Cup.

Jackson impressed the judges with a 720-degree rotation and a switch 540 trick on the combined run of boxes, rails and features at the freestyle park.

Cardrona marketing manager Nadia Ellis said it was only the second time the skifield had held the competition and the turnout was encouraging.

A specially built "mini X-Games" course had put the youngsters through their paces, with the field split into three categories; Super Groms (5-6 years), Rippers (7-9 years) and Shredders (10-12 years).
