Inattention is being blamed for a crash on the Te Anau-Mossburn Highway yesterday morning.
Sergeant Tod Hollebon, of Te Anau, said the 22-year-old American tourist who was the the sole occupant of the car was "relatively uninjured" after her Daihatsu left the road, travelled down a bank and crashed into a deer fence about 7.55am.
The woman was out of the car by the time emergency services arrived at the scene, Sgt Hollebon told the Otago Daily Times.
She was taken to Te Anau Medical Centre as a precaution and later discharged.
Sgt Hollebon said while there were icy patches on the road yesterday,it appeared inattention was the main cause of the crash.
Alcohol was not a factor.
Police inquiries were continuing, Sgt Hollebon said.
