IHC forum to look at issues

Families of children with a disability could be a step closer to accessing the resources they need through the medium of IHC's Heartland forum.

The forum, on Wednesday next week, is part of a nationwide series being held to address issues in specific regions.

IHC director of advocacy Trish Grant said families often found it hard to access information and this difficulty increased in rural areas.

"There are problems accessing education and I'm pretty confident in saying that these issues would be there.

"Often, we find in rural areas that these issues are exacerbated," she said.

IHC advocate Anne Bell said there were issues right from when children were diagnosed to when they moved from schooling to employment.

"People just get the diagnosis and that's it, but you need information.

"Different areas have different issues but there are some common ones; once you have a disabled child you become 'the other' and it's really hard to be included."

The forum will discuss IHC's call to action which asks the Government to improve services towards disabled children.

The Queenstown Heartland forum will run from 10am-2pm, May 16, at Rydges Lakeland Resort.
