Residents and visitors in downtown Queenstown now, for the first time, have around-the-clock access to a $3500 life-saving defibrillator.

Novotel Queenstown Lakeside general manager Jim Moore took custody of the portable and user-friendly piece of equipment on behalf of the hotel earlier this month.

The defibrillator is kept in reception.

Hotel staff have been given basic training to use it and key staff also had first aid training.

While the Queenstown Memorial Hall and Queenstown Library have defibrillators available for public use, St John Wakatipu had been looking for a central business which was always open to take one of the units, area executive officer Lynn Cain said.

Mrs Cain said the emergency service applied to First Sovereign Trust in February and was granted the full cost of the latest kit.

Then ambulance officers heard Novotel had been fundraising for a defibrillator for eight months.

"Statistics show if a defibrillator is available within the first four minutes of a cardiac arrest, the chances of survival increase up to 70%, with good CPR being administered and an ambulance on the way," she said.

St John Wakatipu encourages at least 100 people to learn the basic CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) emergency procedure from tutors and ambulances officers on the Queenstown Village Green on Thursday, June 16, at noon.

The training initiative is part of Heart Safe Community.

This year's St John Flash-a-Light for St John appeal will run from June 18 to 26.

The charity has to raise more than $10 million every year to pay operating costs not covered by the Government and to run all its community services.
