The stories of Edmund Hillary's ascent of Mt Everest and an all-Aboriginal girl pop group that entertains troops in Vietnam will be screened outdoors as part of the Summerdaze Festival.

New Zealand docudrama Beyond the Edge will be shown at an outdoor cinema on Saturday, and Australian comedy drama The Sapphires the previous night.

Queenstown Lakes District Council arts and events facilitator Jan Maxwell said in a statement outdoor movies had always been a highlight of the festival.

''What better way to put yourself in the footsteps of New Zealand's most famous mountaineer than by watching this acclaimed documentary in the midst of our spectacular mountains,'' Mrs Maxwell asked.

• Weather permitting, both screenings will begin at the Red Barn near Remarkables Park Town Centre, Frankton, about 9.45pm. Admission is $5 per person.
