More than 100 Otago-Southland children, from newborns to 10 years of age, had fun at the first Children's Day Family Picnic at the Queenstown Events Centre on Sunday.

Youngsters and parents played a variety of games, including three-legged, egg-and-spoon and sack races, lolly scrambles and prize giveaways inside because of the poor weather. Skyline character Captain Gravity mingled, face-painting was popular and a petting zoo courtesy of Remarkable Vets was open outside the main auditorium.

Stands offered parenting information, baby sign language and youth yoga. Every child was given a hydroslide pass for the day.

The inaugural event celebrating national Children's Day was organised by the Queenstown Lakes Family Centre and the Summit Youth Council, with assistance from the Queenstown Lakes District Council
