Theodor Seuss Geisel, also known as Dr Seuss, began his career as an editorial cartoonist in the 1920s and in the following years he produced 44 children's books, more than 400 World War 2 political cartoons, hundreds of advertisements and countless editorials filled with wonderfully inventive animals, characters and "Seussian humour".
The exhibition will include his illustration art, Unorthodox Taxidermy and his Secret Art Series.
Exhibition curator and Dr Seuss enthusiast Ron Epskamp said while everyone might be familiar with Seuss book illustrations, most were unaware he was foremost a visual artist who painted and sculpted for his own enjoyment.
"Seuss ensured that his estate would not release any of his private collection pieces until after his death.
"So since his sad passing, new Seuss works are being slowly released to Seuss agents worldwide.
"The only way to view these historic art works is to visit one of the exclusive 'Art of Dr Seuss' exhibitions [so] for the first time, the media and the public are able to gain a rare and fascinating insight into this great creative mind," Mr Epskamp said.
"Art of Dr Seuss" will be held from July 13 to 29 at the Wilson Gallery, Beach St, Queenstown.
