Golfer processed for drink-driving

An Australian described by Queenstown police as a professional golfer was allegedly driving while more than twice the legal alcohol limit, in Queenstown, early on Saturday.

The 33-year-old man from Western Australia was stopped by police on the corner of Frankton Rd and Suburb St about 2am.

He had been staying in a Queenstown hotel.

He allegedly produced a reading of 921mcg of alcohol per litre of breath.

The Otago Daily Times understands the man did not play during the Michael Hill New Zealand Open at The Hills.

It was unknown if he was a caddy for the event, or was in Queenstown as a spectator.

The man is expected to appear in the Queenstown District Court on February 8.

Queenstown police took in two grossly-intoxicated men for detoxification on Saturday.

An unemployed 17-year-old Invercargill man who lives in Queenstown, spent 12 hours at the police station, after he was found on Rees St, on Saturday at 10.30pm.

A 28-year-old Queenstown man was found "grossly intoxicated" on Rees St on Saturday at 5am, Acting Sergeant Craig Gibson, of Queenstown, said.

A Frenchman residing in Queenstown drew attention to his intoxicated state by allegedly sitting in his car and revving the engine loudly, on Saturday at 2.30am.

His breath-alcohol level was allegedly close to three times over the legal limit.

An intoxicated 25-year-old Queenstown man told police he was assaulted by five men in Cow Lane on Saturday about 4.30am.

The victim said the men mostly wore black clothes, noting one was also wearing a black cap and black shorts.
