The Salvation Army is hailing the "heartwarming" generosity of Frankton and Kelvin Heights residents, who helped fill a van with Christmas supplies during Wednesday night's second annual foodbank drive.

The project is organised by Wakatipu Lions Club and enlisted the help of the Queenstown Lions Club, as well as the Frankton Fire Brigade fire appliance and two St John ambulances, which were used to alert residents to the foodbank drive.

About 30 people went out collecting and Salvation Army community manager Blair McKenzie said the residents of the two suburbs made the drive a "wonderful success".

"It warms my heart and makes me glad to live here. There's certainly a need for it this year. Food goes out as quickly as it comes in. Our heartfelt thanks go out to all the people who donated."

Mr McKenzie said the next job was to draw up a Christmas gift and hamper list.

"A lot of the people we work with throughout the year have had a tough time and can't afford to have a lovely Christmas dinner, so we want to just bless them with a food hamper that's not your usual parcel."
