Many budding firefighters got to see the inner workings of the Queenstown Fire Station on Saturday during the Queenstown Volunteer Fire Brigade Open Day, which simultaneously raised money for Canterbury firefighters affected by the September earthquakes.

The multi-agency open day involved members of the fire service, Queenstown Police, the Salvation Army, Victim Support, the Department of Conservation, Rural Fire, Civil Defence, Water Safety and St John.

Station officer Duncan Fisher said about 600 people turned out for the open day, which was held every two or three years.

"We do it ... to raise awareness about what we do, but the reason we did it this year was to raise money for the Firefighters Benevolent Fund, which is helping out all the firefighters affected by the earthquake in Christchurch.

"The money we raised will go towards that fund."

Mr Fisher said the amount raised was still being tallied yesterday afternoon, but he hoped it would be several hundred dollars.
