Extra police on hand at weekend

Wanaka police had a busy weekend attending to driving and disorder offences, with the spike in workload coinciding with pleasant weather and an influx of visitors in town for several events.

Constable Mike Johnston said the Uni Snow Games had not created a huge workload for police, and were possibly a little quieter that the previous year's games.

The games concluded on Friday evening with a presentation ceremony at Shooters Bar.

Const Johnston said the annual midwinter Base Party at the Lake Wanaka Centre also seemed to have fewer people compared with 2007.

He estimated 400 people danced the night away on Saturday compared with about 600 the year before.

There was a visible police presence in Wanaka all weekend, with the rural drink-driving team, three Wanaka officers and the Alexandra-based community action team rostered to the resort at various times.

Five people were processed for drink-driving offences, with one driver also arrested for dangerous driving after a near-collision between his car and another on the corner of Brownston and Helwick Sts on Saturday night.

A 24-year-old Christchurch woman spent a night in the detoxification cell at the police station after entering the wrong house in a state of gross intoxication, Const Johnston said.

A man also spent the night in the cells after being arrested and charged with offensive behaviour.

A 21-year-old male visitor was arrested and charged with wilful trespass after failing to leave the Base Party when asked.

Two Wanaka men aged 22 and 24 were arrested and charged with unlawfully being on premises after attempting to gain entry to the Base Party without tickets.

A group of locals were found fighting outside the Dough Bin on Ardmore St early yesterday.

Police have spoken to a juvenile and two adults and inquiries are continuing.
