The driver of this Nissan Terrano escaped with only minor injuries after the vehicle rolled in icy conditions near Butcher's Dam, Alexandra, about 6.30am yesterday. The woman, who did not wish to be identified, said she had skidded on the extremely icy road, over-corrected and rolled the 4WD. Photo by Yvonne O'Hara.
Black ice caused several accidents around Queenstown yesterday, giving emergency services a busy morning attending three crashes within 40 minutes.

At 6.30am, a car hit ice on State Highway 6 between the Remarkables access road and Kelvin Heights. Police said the driver had lost control, and the car rolled. Both occupants were uninjured.

Then, at 6.45am, a 28-year-old Cromwell woman driving towards Queenstown hit ice on the Ladies' Mile, near Lake Hayes Estate. Her car spun 360 degrees, and crashed at the side of the road. She was taken to Lakes District Hospital to be checked for possible minor head injuries.

Just after 7am, the driver of a car on McDonnell Rd near Arrowtown lost control when the vehicle struck ice and crashed into a fence. The three male occupants, aged 47, 49 and 52, were taken to Lakes District Hospital with possible back injuries. The 52-year-old was later transferred to Southland Hospital in Invercargill for further assessment.
