The long-awaited Big Queenstown Down Winder set sail on Saturday, and 19 windsurfers and kitesurfers from the Southern Lakes and Otago enjoyed the waters of Lake Wakatipu.

Organised by the Southern Lakes Wind Riders Club, it was the second social Down Winder after debuting two years ago.

It marked the end of the season and was in memory of Jude Green, a Queenstown windsurfer who died in February 2008.

Organiser Sue Bradley, of Queenstown, said lake conditions were variable, and participants had to change their sails accordingly.

Club members were considering a day of activities in Wanaka and the southern coast.

The next official Down Winder would be in February 2010.
