Devil's Staircase crash victim named

The Invercargill woman who died in a crash involving a concrete truck at Devil's Staircase on State Highway 6 between Frankton and Kingston on Friday night has been named.

She was Joanne Steel (40).

Mrs Steel died at the scene of the accident, Detective Lisa Watt, of Queenstown, said.

Mrs Steel was pastor of the Southern River Church in Invercargill.

NZPA reports that Mrs Steel died after a collision involving a concrete truck, a 4WD and a car about 6.20pm on SH6 at Wye Creek.

''A 21-tonne concrete truck with the 'arm' on the back of it travelling north to Queenstown crossed the centre line and hit vehicles coming in the opposite direction. It hit the first vehicle, a Nissan Torano 4WD, and a second vehicle behind it,'' a police spokesman said.

The car and 4WD ended up about 50m off the road in bushes and Mrs Steel, the driver the 4WD, was killed instantly.

Her 14-year-old daughter, a passenger in the 4WD, was not seriously injured.

The driver of the car, a pregnant woman, was taken to Dunedin Hospital for treatment.

The two remained in stable conditions and were expected to make a full recovery, Det Watt said.

Police have appealed for witnesses who saw the PumpCrete concrete truck on State Highway 6 between Winton and the Devil's Staircase area before the 6.20pm crash.

The male driver of the truck was uninjured.

Det Watt said that the Serious Crash Unit was investigating the crash.
