Council 'sure of' library job figures

The Queenstown Lakes District Council has rejected a claim it has miscounted the number of librarians it employs.

Secretary of the Southern Local Government Officers' Union Angela Watson told the Otago Daily Times on Tuesday the council appeared to have underestimated the number of librarians by about three and a-half fulltime equivalent positions in its draft consultation document, which outlines how the council might restructure.

However, chief executive Adam Feeley has responded by saying the council is ''sure of the numbers'', which were taken from its payroll.

''The three [fulltime equivalent] difference is three managers - shared library service manager, Wanaka library manager and Queenstown library manager.

''The numbers used in the report were for librarians' positions and, therefore, did not include managers.''

Because of concern about the numbers, Ms Watson had requested the council extend the time librarians had to make submissions on the document.

However, Mr Feeley said in an email to the ODT ''there is no justification that I can see to allow further time as there is no fundamental issue with the report''.

''If the union thinks there are matters that require clarification then it should highlight these in its submission, which council will welcome.

''That is the point of consulting on a draft report.''
