Committee looks to ease way for events

Queenstown Lakes District Council committee called for a review of facilities with Lakes Leisure to ensure they were "event friendly" when it adopted the events strategy last week.

Cr Cath Gilmour made the amendment when the strategy was tabled during the community services committee meeting.

Cr Gilmour and Cr John S. Wilson also wanted to see council processes and compliance issues for event planning eased this year.

Cr Wilson proposed a "one-stop shop" workshop for event organisers.

However, community services general manager Paul Wilson said it could be another six to eight months before a one-point-of-contact office, similar to Film Otago-Southland, could be set up.

The strategy was tabled for adoption for inclusion in the long-term community plan.

A total of $50,000 was requested in the plan for the events partnership programme, on top of the existing $100,000 for the annual Summerdaze Festival and $41,000 allocated to assist all other events from a community budget.

Councillors also resolved to explore the roles of Destination Queenstown and Lake Wanaka Tourism in direct event funding and facilitation.

Cr Wilson noted the economic benefits of attracting people to the district and the link between events and tourism.

He was supported by Cr Vanessa van Uden and Cr Lex Perkins who said the strategy could assist events in the shoulder seasons, which fitted with the brief of Destination Queenstown and Lake Wanaka Tourism.

Setting out the criteria for events was resolved, following questions by Crs Wilson and Gilmour about what makes an "icon event".

Warbirds Over Wanaka, Queenstown Winter Festival and Winter Games NZ were described as icon events in the strategy document.

It was recommended the council foster closer relations with funding trusts.

Cr Wilson said many community trustees asked organisers how much local authority funding the event was getting when considering their contribution and it was important to open a "dialogue with trusts as to their way of thinking", he said.

The events strategy would be reviewed annually and would initially involve quarterly meetings between the council and strategy workshop participants.
