Following on fromits recent annual meeting, the Queenstown Climbing Club is seeking to raise the profile of climbing in the Wakatipu Basin to new heights this season.

Club president Guillaume Charton, who has just returned from a six-month worldwide climbing holiday, said the main focus after the AGM was on getting a wider range of residents involved in climbing and increasing the club's input into the community.

"We want more people involved from different fields, to try bringing more projects and activities and to have a bigger involvement in our community's outcomes," Mr Charton said.

To that end, new positions have been added to the committee, bringing the total number to 14, including youth development and advocacy officers, a website administrator and guidebook editor.

Mr Charton, who is also a French teacher at Wakatipu High School, is passionate about getting the younger generation out on to "the rock".

The club was in the process of organising spring trips for school pupils to the indoor wall at the Event Centre, the Gorge Rd Crag or Wye Creek.

This year's AGM reflected on the success of 2010-11 projects such as the installation of toilet facilities at Wye Creek. This season would see some developments by the club, including one "very big project".

While plans included ice-climbing trips, photographic competitions and a mini film festival, Mr Charton was tight-lipped on what the major project would be.

"We would prefer not to say anything; to wait until the club has more input into whether they are keen or not."

Another challenge facing the club is an ongoing one - to ensure the Wakatipu's climbs are maintained and kept safe.
