Climbers' return best help, Cotter says

Wanaka-based Adventure Consultants plans to return to Nepal with climbing teams in September or October, once the monsoon is over.

Chief executive Guy Cotter told the Otago Daily Times yesterday the Sherpas, who rely on foreign climbing parties for an income, were keen to see them back.

''Even before we left, the Sherpas were saying: 'Where you can help us most is by coming back and making sure that you keep bringing people here, so we have long-term employment, so we can rebuild our lives and rebuild our homes'.''

Mr Cotter said returning to some areas of Nepal would be difficult because of the damage done to lodges where climbing teams stayed.

He said it was too early to know how the earthquakes might have affected the demand from climbers for expeditions in the Himalayas.

''I would hope that people would be keen on going there to help them get on with rebuilding that really important tourism economy.''
