Federico Fellini's classic Nights of Cabiria will open the 2011 season for the Queenstown Film Society next month.

The Academy Award-winning film opened the debut season a decade ago.

The society will celebrate its 10th anniversary with the presentation on the silver screen, on Tuesday, May 3.

The Italian drama was the first movie society members watched in 2001.

This year's international programme continues every Tuesday.

President Tanya Surrey told the Queenstown Times it was one of the society's strongest programmes yet, with a variety of New Zealand and world cinema dramas, comedies and thrillers.

There was a particular focus on documentaries this year, Ms Surrey said.

"We're very proud of the efforts to keep the society going for 10 years," she said.

"It's a milestone.

"When it was first set up, they didn't know if it would last a season."

Movie screenings will be held in Dorothy Brown's Cinema and Bar, in Arrowtown.

Membership costs $105 a year, which is less than $5 per film.

Half-year membership costs $60 and three-film sampler tickets cost $30.

There were about 50 members and new members can join on any night.
