Changes to coach parking rules

Coach parking rules were changed by a Queenstown Lakes District Council committee recently, after a meeting with the Bus and Coach Association in July.

The infrastructure committee unanimously carried the recommendation to tighten the time restriction applying to the coach parking on lower Beach St and introduce a new on-street coach parking area at the One Mile end of Lake Esplanade.

The lower Beach St restriction near Steamer Wharf, from P60 to P15, aims to increase turnover of pick-ups and set-downs for passengers destined for TSS Earnslaw cruises, or nearby hotels and restaurants.

The parking bay of three coach lengths towards One Mile is intended to be an area where coaches can park between pick-ups and set-downs of passengers.

The disadvantage is the new 40m-long coach park will take up about six unrestricted car parking bays.

However, P180 parking will apply between 8am and 6pm, so coach drivers have the option of parking close to Lake Esplanade hotels overnight.
