Capacity field for full marathon

Queenstown's full marathon is officially sold out.

The popular Queenstown International Marathon - in only its second year - has swollen from 6000 entrants last year to almost 9000 for the November 21 event, putting the squeeze on accommodation and pushing capacity on sponsor Air New Zealand's extra flights.

A week ago, the Otago Daily Times reported the 10km race was full and the marathon proper and half-marathon were not far behind.

Now, chief organiser Dave Beeche, of Lagardere Unlimited Oceania, has confirmed the full marathon is sold out, too.

''We are absolutely thrilled with the level of interest in this year's Air New Zealand Queenstown International Marathon, and with the marathon and 10km races now sold out we are looking forward to delivering all participants an outstanding experience in New Zealand's most beautiful destination.''

More than 1200 entrants are from overseas, from 27 countries.

Just over 1500 runners are from Auckland.
