Busy week on skifields

Wanaka skifields have been busy with a range of events to cater for the crowds that have flocked to the mountains for the busy school-holiday period.

Snow Park NZ's Junior Open finished yesterday with its final day of competition, as young snowboarders took to the rails and park features at the freestyle facility's custom-made slopestyle course.

At Tuesday's freeskiing competition, Manu Barnard, of Hawea, won the grommets (under 9) division, while Jackson and Beau-James Wells, both of Wanaka, won the respective boys youth (10-13) and junior (14-16) sections.

Maggie Little, Olivia Jones and Adie Lawrence were winners in the girl's freeski grommet, junior, and youth divisions.

Youngsters at Treble Cone and Cardrona Alpine Resorts have been in birthday-party mode with celebrations for the skifield's respective TC Cat and "Pengi" mascots.

Multicoloured balloons were released from the courtyard, to celebrate mascot Pengi's 10th birthday yesterday, Cardrona ambassador Carol Little said.

Treble Cone will be blowing out the candles on a birthday cake today for its furry mascot, TC Cat, with "everyone" invited to join the celebrations.

Members of Treble Cone's TC Cat Club have a variety of activities planned for the day, with a mini world-cup race day taking place on the learners run, marketing manager Nigel Kerr said.
