Brothel control bylaw for consideration on Monday

A hearing for the Queenstown Lakes District Council's draft brothel control bylaw will be held in Queenstown on Monday.

Fifty-four submissions were received on the draft bylaw, 54 in opposition and four in favour.

The modified bylaw was recommended for Queenstown and Wanaka because the current bylaw could breach the Prostitution Reform Act 2003, which legalised commercial sex.

The existing bylaw bans brothels within 100m of homes, schools, preschools, churches, community facilities or reserves and is opposed by conservative lobby group Family First NZ.

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10am on Monday, before an extraordinary council meeting at 11am, to be held public excluded, to consider: Lakes Environmental Ltd directors, Queenstown Airport Corporation, the United Water Contract and the chief executive's key performance indicators.
