Plans to create a maritime hub for the Wakatipu region by restoring the historic Frankton shipping office to its former glory have been boosted by a $200,000 grant from the Central Lakes Trust.

The money will go towards the restoration of the former ticket office and boatshed at the Frankton marina.

The renovated boatshed will have storage lockers and an area for building dinghies as well as barbecue and picnic facilities.

The ticket office will house a cafe and local maritime heritage displays.

"The rich maritime history of Lake Wakatipu will be told for the first time, and will be easily accessible to the whole community," Wakatipu Community Maritime Preservation Society marketing co-ordinator Jo Smith said.

The trust has made grants totalling $2.7 million in the first quarter of 2010.

"It is vitally important that the trust maintains its support to community and charitable organisations that do such great work.

"The level of grants during the past quarter clearly reflects our commitment to provide a helping hand to local community projects," trust chief executive Paul Allison said.

Other Queenstown organisations to benefit include the Wakatipu Abuse Prevention Network, which received $18,545 towards upgrading its new premises in Ballarat St, and Showbiz Queenstown, which got $15,000 for this year's show, Oliver!.
