Queenstown Lakes District Council has approved a recommendation to rename all bike trails in the Ben Lomond Recreational Reserve the "Queenstown Bike Park".
The motion was passed with little fanfare at yesterday's community services committee meeting, with Cr Lex Perkins joking that the new name was "very original", drawing laughs from around chambers.
Council district forester Briana Pringle presented the recommendation and said the trails were becoming increasingly popular both here and overseas, but were "called by many different names, which can be confusing and can have negative implications".
There was "value in giving the trails one name which can be used in print, online and through word of mouth," Ms Pringle said.
The new name arose out of discussions between bike park users, the Mountain Bike Club, Skyline, and Vertigo Bikes.
Current signage will not be changed to reflect the new name but new signs will use the new name.
