Bail hearing today for pair charged with store assault

Victim Support has been helping a Wanaka Night'n Day staff member cope with the serious assault which took place in the store early on Saturday.

Night 'n Day Foodstore chief executive Tony Allison said that the store would reopen today following the serious assault on Kahu Vincent about 3am on Saturday.

Victim Support and the company had been supporting the staff member who was working at the time of the assault.

The police scene examination finished yesterday.

Two men appeared in the Queenstown District Court jointly charged with intentionally causing grievous bodily harm.

Father-of-two Mr Vincent, aged in his late 20s, was critically injured. He was flown to Dunedin Hospital following the attack.

The defendants were remanded without plea until 10am today for a bail hearing.

Duty solicitor Joseph Mooney successfully applied for interim name suppression for the men, saying they had not yet informed some family members of the charges.

Mr Mooney said there were ''identification issues'' with one of the men, which could be a factor in the case.

One also faced a charge of wilfully attempting to prevent the course of justice by threatening to kill a third man if he [the third man] spoke to the police.

Judge Michael Turner remanded both men in custody.

Mr Allison said the company was looking into the need for greater security for the store but did not want to make a ''knee-jerk reaction''.

The attack was a ''one-off incident'' that was ''totally out of the blue and unexpected and hasn't happened in one of our stores before'', he said.

It was ''difficult'' to know if it indicated a need for more security, but the company did not want a repeat of the incident.

''Ultimately our thoughts are with the victim and his family,'' Mr Allison said.

''He has a couple of young kids and we just hate to see this sort of thing happening.''

Last night, Mr Vincent remained in a critical condition in Dunedin Hospital's intensive care unit.

Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Blackie appealed for information yesterday from people in the store at the time of the assault.

Police were also appealing for information on sightings of the two men wearing crash helmets, walking in, or near, Ardmore St, at the time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Wanaka police on (03) 443-7272 or call Crimestoppers and give information anonymously on 0800 555-111.
