Attractive incentives at car fair

The first person to buy a car at the debut Queenstown Car Fair will receive a free warrant of fitness and free service, to the value of about $200, organisers say.

That is just one of the attractions of the car fair, which will be held for the first time on the front car park of the Queenstown Events Centre on Sunday, from 10am to 2pm.

Sellers pay $20 entry but viewing is free.

More than 40 vehicles were booked by yesterday, including Subarus, Toyotas, BMWs, a Valiant, an old Holden, a ute and a boat.

The fair was organised by Jodie and Sean Squires, co-directors of Queenstown automotive workshop World Cars Ltd.

Owners needed to call and book in advance to guarantee a spot as space was limited to 60 vehicles for the inaugural fair.

Owners would park and pop the bonnet, and were encouraged to be near their vehicles to answer buyer queries.

A trio of qualified mechanics from World Cars would be on hand to answer questions and would provide a vehicle inspection for $70.

Sellers set prices, and buyers were free to haggle and organise test drives.

World Cars would not take a commission from sale.

Sausage sizzle and coffee stalls would be open.

Mrs Squires said they had noticed thousands attended car fairs in Auckland, held every Sunday.

The couple had the idea of introducing the concept to the Wakatipu last year.

The events centre front car park was considered the best venue, for its high visibility.

Mrs Squires said vehicles were always for sale by private owners and cars were often parked alongside the highway, such as Ladies Mile highway.

These owners could face fines from the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

All proceeds from the car fair would go to the Wakatipu Trails Trust.

At this stage the car fairs would be held on the last Sunday of each month.

Ideas for the future included posting images and details of vehicles on www.worldcars.co.nz.
