Assaults blamed on alcohol

Most of those arrested in Queenstown over the weekend were drunk, and the expression "Christmas cheer" made too little of what was becoming a serious problem, Sergeant Brian Cameron, of Queenstown, said yesterday.

At 2am on Friday, a 30-year-old Queenstown man was arrested and charged with assault, following a domestic incident with his former partner.

At 1.40am on Saturday, two brothers from Cromwell, aged 30 and 32, were arrested following an incident in central Queenstown.

Sgt Cameron said one was charged with fighting and the other with obstructing police.

At 11.50pm on Saturday, another 30-year-old Queenstown man was arrested after a fight.

Ten minutes later, a 29-year-old Temuka man was arrested after an incident "involving a limousine" on Camp St.

He also allegedly broke a wing mirror off a taxi.

At 1.40am yesterday, a 16-year-old local youth was referred to youth aid after he was seen by police "running over the top of" a vehicle and two others on Frankton Rd, at Frankton.

He then allegedly assaulted two officers when they tried to deal with him.

Neither officer was injured, Sgt Cameron said.

"Alcohol is the problem. If you can't handle your drink, don't drink."
