A Glenorchy artist has dedicated the past year to capturing the visual delights of the Wakatipu Basin for a new calendar.

Professional painter John Crump (67) has been painting landscapes around the Wakatipu for nearly 40 years.

Three years ago, Mr Crump left his gallery and home in Otaki, on the Kapiti Coast and moved to Glenorchy, with his wife.

"I feel that Glenorchy just doesn't advertise itself very well. My wife works in Queenstown and she often meets people who have never heard of Glenorchy, which just amazes us," he said.

Originally, Mr Crump planned to compile 12 impressionist landscape paintings of the Glenorchy area, but decided other areas of the Wakatipu Basin were too beautiful to miss out.

The calendar features views in and around Queenstown, Frankton, Arrowtown and Glenorchy.

Specialising in impressionist "plein air" painting, Mr Crump regularly holds outdoor teaching classes for amateur enthusiasts.

"I've always enjoyed teaching ... it's just great to see people of all ages out there enjoying the amazing landscapes," he said.

The calendar costs $35 and is available from Paper Plus in Queenstown, Arrowtown Gallery, the Eclectic Art Gallery in Glenorchy, and The Glenorchy Lakehouse luxury bed and breakfast.

His work can be seen at The John Crump Glenorchy Gallery, off Glenorchy Rd.
