Aiming to be affordable

Less than a dollar a day will enable locals to take a dip in the soon-to-be-opened Queenstown Aquatic Centre.

Lakes Leisure aquatic general manager Cam Sheppard said Lakes Leisure had been working with the Queenstown Lakes District Council and the Lakes Leisure board to ensure the pool was both "economical and affordable", with a particular emphasis on locals.

The result was a subsidised year's membership rate, which could be paid monthly as a direct debit - subject to conditions - costing $3 a week for children, including those at high school; $8 a week for adults; and $6 a week for beneficiaries and senior citizens.

A child's yearly membership was $120 and a beneficiary or senior citizen's $235.

Family membership packages, including two adults and all dependent children, were priced at $750 a year, or $16.50 a week, paid on a monthly direct-debit basis.

Membership would also entitle local swimmers to free access to the Arrowtown Memorial Pool.

Three-month memberships and 10-concession options were also available, he said.

On the other hand, casual fees had been set to capture the visitor market.

"The cost of a casual swim, capturing visitors and tourists, will be $8 for an adult and $3 for a child.

"A hydro-slide add-on, which gives you unlimited rides when the slide is running, will be an extra $8 for an adult and $3 for a child for visitors and concession holders," Mr Sheppard said.

The centre will be on view during a public open day from 10am to 12.30pm on May 10 and will be open for business from May 31.

Pre-sales of concessions and memberships will be available from May 10.
