Abuse proves too much

Wanaka's sole parking/animal control officer Ryan Holloway has resigned after just a year, citing the abuse he got as part of the reason.

Mr Holloway said yesterday threats had been made against him, including from a man who said he would ''punch his head in'' after being issued with an infringement notice for parking on a yellow line.

That matter, late last year, had been settled in court, Mr Holloway said.

There were also other incidents.

Asked which job was worse for abuse, parking or dog control, Mr Holloway said: ''You could flip a coin, depending on what day it was''.

People were ''very sensitive'' about their dogs and people could get ''very carried away'' over a $12 ticket, even when they were in the wrong.

''When they get caught, people just don't want to put their hand up, which is a shame.''

Mr Holloway said he did not want to ''bad-mouth'' his employer, the Queenstown Lakes District Council, but he believed the problem with the job was that there was only one officer.

''In Wanaka you are on your own [with] no-one else over here to support you in the role.''

Mr Holloway believed part of the increased cost would be offset by increased revenue.

Council regulatory manager Lee Webster declined to discuss Mr Holloway's reasons for resigning. However, he said parking and animal control officers had a ''very challenging role''.

''Not everyone appreciates the work they do until there is a problem, e.g. they can't get a parking space due to people parking over time, or someone has parked over their driveway, or their dog has gone missing and been found safely by the team.

''Occasionally, there are also instances where threats are made to the officers and we ask for assistance from our police colleagues,'' Mr Webster said. Wanaka did not warrant having two people employed in the role.

''However, we are reviewing the possibilities of a roster for this role with new and existing staff,'' Mr Webster said.

The job has been advertised, and Mr Webster said he would be carrying out interviews next week.
