Bike Wanaka Inc has received nearly $20,000 in funding to build a new mountain bike track at Lismore Park, next to its existing jump park which was established four years ago.
Grants were received from the Central Lakes Trust, Otago Community Trust, New Zealand Community Trust and mountain bike clothing company Ground Effect to pay for the planned "Rock 'n' Rolla" track.
Construction is programmed to start in May, with completion expected by late spring.
Bike Wanaka Inc committee member Jamie Greenway, who has led the bike track's fundraising drive for the past 12 months, was thrilled to know the project could soon get under way.
"The Rock 'n' Rolla trail will be a great addition to Lismore Bike Park. It will form a loop in the steeper face of trees on the town side of the park, giving a better option for riders heading across town towards Sticky [Forest], commuting or heading to the park for a session on the pump track and jumps," Mr Greenway said.
"We're always looking for something new - it freshens the park up a little bit and creates a bit of new interest."
The trail would be about 1.2km long and like a "mini Deans Bank [Albert Town to Dublin Bay bike track] in the heart of town".
Mr Greenway will build the track along with fellow Bike Wanaka Inc members Dan Haydon, Kris Carson and other volunteers.
